Green Gowns of the 18th Century

I have a house full of people here for The Wedding, so forgive me for being quite absent. It's all a bit mad here!

So in honor of the Historical Sew Fortnightly Challenge #21, and my light green wedding gown, here are some gorgeous 18th century green dresses.

Lady Charlotte Finch, 1787 Via
Esther Boardman, 1789, by Ralph Earl, via
Journal de Luxus, April 1792, via
Maria de Ron von Breda
The Met, 1750s

Fries Museum, 1740 - 70
The Met, 1775
LACMA, early 18th c.
Nom Nom Nom! I'll never get tired of looking at these....

  1. I like the first one very, very much, because it appears to be a more voluminous sleeveless overgown of a taffetta-like fabric worn over an underdress of very classical proportions - wow!

    1. (though it could be just a chemisette thing.)

    2. It looks like velvet! I love it too, so luxurious. No wonder Scarlett went for the curtains!

    3. I did not think of velvet - the image is kind of blurry, so I ascribed it to that; but now I cannot unsee. :D

  2. They're so pretty, I especially love the first one, and the fashion plate. The seafoamy green quilted petticoat is gorgeous too. I'm working on one the exact same colour.

Also, congratulations! Does this make Mr.C a Duke?

  3. Do I notice a "green theme"? Are you teasing us?

  4. I love green :) Cheers to a lovely wedding and a lifetime of happiness!!

  5. All the very best fun for your special day, and I wish you the happiness I have found with MY MrC (awww) heehe xo

  6. I know as lovely as your gown is going to be, it will not upstage your beautiful happy face! Here's wishing you the 30+ years of happiness I and my Mr L have had!

  7. Os deseo a Chris y a tí toda la felicidad que os merecéis. Toda la del mundo. Espero que el día de vuestra boda sea fabuloso y que el amor y la ilusión os acompañe durante toda vuestra vida.

  8. The costumes are beautiful sighing

  9. You seem so calm about everything, I hope you really are. You are going to look beautiful. And with a dress like no other. Can't wait to see pictures. Best Wishes Paula

  10. Best wishes to you and your honey for a lifetime of friendship, hope, joy and love. Cheers.

  11. Nor will we! Thanks! And thanks for sharing with us at such an exciting and busy time! CONGRATS!
