Celebrating Renoir – The Artist

In the Garden, 1885

I haven’t been doing much (any) sewing since I got back from Williamsburg, so I don’t have much (any) to show in that department. Instead I’d like to share a few of my favorite Renoir paintings…

By the Water (Near the Lake), 1880
Camille Monet and Her Sone Jean in the Garden at Argenteuil, 1874
Canoieing (Young Girl in a Boat), 1877
Madame Monet, 1872
Portrait of the Couple Sisley, 1868
Rapha Maitre, 1871
The First Outing, 1875-1876
The Promenade, 1876
Riding in the Bois de Boulogne (Madame Henriette Darras or The Ride), 1873
Woman With a Parrot (Henriette Darras), 1871
Woman With Parasol, 1873
The Box, 1874
The Swing (La Balancoire), 1876
Mlle Irene Cahen d’Anvers, 1880

Renoir was quite a prolific artist, and to be honest I didn’t realize. Going through as many art history classes as I did, we always studied the same couple paintings, and never dove into the thousand-or-so paintings, he did over his 78 years.

Self-Portrait at the Age of Thirty Five, 1876

He had some French painter hotness going on too!

What I love most about the original Impressionists is that they all had classical training and serious skills. They could all paint realistically, but it was their choice to obscure that realism and explore style, color, and expression fluidly.
