Trendy Takes on 3 Classic Halloween Costumes

It’s October, which means it’s Halloweenapalooza time!  To kick off the month, I thought it would be fun to put together three classic Halloween costumes, but in a modern way, yet using your historical footwear (and nobody’ll know!)

“Modern” takes on Halloween costumes is actually quite historical, like the illustration from “Dennison’s Bogie Book — A 1922 Guide for Vintage Decorating and Entertaining at Halloween and Thanksgiving” above, or everyone’s favorite Victorian Batgirl costume:

So why not follow in the footsteps, dig around in the ole closet, and see what you can put together.  Here are some ideas…

The Werewolf

The Ghost

Halloween Fashionista's Ghost Costume

Have fun this Halloween! I can’t resist the candy and the kookiness, can you?

I have been a regular reader of your blog for some time and have really enjoyed it. You have a wonderful talent that I envy. There are some things about costuming, however, that really upset me, and I was really sad to see you promoting the use of real fur for your Halloween costuming. Most animals used for the fur industry suffer terribly before their death–either on fur farms or when caught in the wild with leghold traps. You can learn more about the fur industry here http://209.61.249.27/fur_farms.asp or search it on google. There are several ways to not support this horribly abusive industry, and to still have the look you're going for: buy faux, or buy vintage or secondhand!

Thanks again for sharing your sewing adventures.

Hi Tammy – thanks for your comment. Any promotion of anything in particular wasn't on purpose – I used Polyvore to assemble the looks for each costume, based simply on a collection of images. If you don't support real fur, don't wear it. You can achieve the same look with a faux fur scarf, or not wear any kind of fur-like element at all, as you say.
